"Australia - towards a society for all ages" is the theme chosen to celebrate the United Nations International Year of Older Persons. The Royal Australian Mint is celebrating this important Year with the 1999 Six Coin Set International Year of Older Persons in proof and uncirculated finishes. In both sets, the $1 coin is devoted to the logo representing the Year, which is surrounded by a border stating the name of the Year and the theme.
The logo has great symbolic significance, emphasising vitality, diversity and interdependence. The image also illustrates movement and progression.
This Year will help encourage greater kinship between the community and older persons and recognise the contribution that older Australians make to the community.
For the first time all coins feature the new effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley.
